SA honours SADC elder statesmen

Pretoria ‑ Three former heads of state from the Southern African Development Community (SADC) region were recently honoured by South Africa for their outstanding contributions during the nation’s fight against apartheid as well as the liberation of the continent as a whole.

The three former presidents, the late Sir Ketumile Masire of Botswana, Joaquim Chissano ofMozambique and Sam Nujoma of Namibia were bestowed with the Order of the Companions of Oliver Tambo in Gold during the 2018 National Orders Awards ceremony that was held in the capital Pretoria recently.

Speaking during the ceremony, President Cyril Ramaphosa said South Africa recognises the role that was played by several countries within the region and beyond in assisting during the struggle for independence in the country.
